What, Exactly, Is Structural Steel Rolling?
Structural Steel Rolling involves the formation of structural shapes via a bending process. A myriad of shapes are made via this process. Structural steel-shaping can include:
- Square and rectangular tubing
- T-beams, I-beams and wide-flange beams
- Flat bars
- Pipes, rails, tracks and much, much more!
Steel rolling utilizes intense pressure applied to the material. The material passes through a specialized machine which bends the tubing or the beam to the desired radius. Steel rolling is effective when requirements for bending are extreme. Even 360-degree bends are produced with ease.
The mandrel method of bending is also utilized. This system is implemented on projects involving tubing or pipes. It prevents material from rippling. With the mandrel system, we can roll square and rectangular tubing that is limited to 180-degree bending. The Mandrel system creates a bend that is completely uniform and distortion-free.
At the bottom of this page, you’ll notice that structural shapes are rolled in various ways, including:
The ‘easy-way’ is bending the material along the axis with the smallest moment of inertia.
The ‘hard-way’ is bending the piece in the direction where its moment of inertia is the greatest.
